Installing Dicom 4.0

Step-1: Check or Install Microsoft Data Access Component

Dicom requires Microsoft Data Access Component 2.0 (MDAC 2.0) or later. Check that it is installed in your computer.

If you are running Windows 95 or Windows 98 you may need to download and install MDAC 2.0. Released in July 1998 MDAC 2.0 comes with NT4/SP4, Windows 2000, WindowsXP, MS Internet Explorer 5.0, MS SQL Server 7.0, and MS Office 2000. If your machine already has any of these or newer version installed, you have MDAC already.

To check whether it is installed, you may try to find a file named MSADO15.DLL (from Windows Explorer menu select Tools / Find / Files or Folders...). Usually this file is located in the "C:\Program Files\Common Files\System\ADO\" directory.

If the MDAC 2.0 or later is not installed, you can download MDAC 2.5 RTM from here. Run the EXE file to get MDAC installed. You can visit to check back the recent version of MDAC at Microsoft Data Access site.

Step-2: Install Dicom 4.0

Download the Dicom40Install.zip from the Dicom Download Page. Note that this file can be found at many other locations around the world wide web. The list of available locations can be found on the same page.

Unzip the file in a temporary directory and run setup.exe. This will install Dicom 4.0 in your machine.

Step-3: Unzip Examples

Dicom copy the EXAPLES.ZIP file in the application directory (by default it is "C:\Program Files\Dicom40\" directory). This file cotains Dicom example documents to demonstrate various expressions and document tips and tricks. Extract the ZIP files with folder names in the same directory. All example files will be copied into a EXAMPLES sub directory in this folder.

Step-4: Run Dicom 4.0

Select from the Start menu, Programs / Dicom 4.0 / Dicom 4.0.exe to run it.

Dicom can be started with any of the predefined startup modes, namely Compact, Normal, Custom, and Tray Only. You can select a mode from the File / Preferences.../Mode Settings/Startup Mode.
